THE NATHAN HALE
Foreign Policy SOCIETY

Who We Are

The Nathan Hale Foreign Policy Society (NHFPS) is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization of young scholars and professionals dedicated to contributing to today’s dialogue about American foreign policy.  Named after the Revolutionary War patriot Nathan Hale who regretted having “but one life to give for my country,” the Society was founded by recent graduates of Yale and Oxford Universities devoted to the ideas of public debate and public service.  Over the past few years, our membership has grown to several thousand people from all parts of the United States and many foreign countries.

The primary mission of the Nathan Hale Foreign Policy Society is to make positive contributions to the conversation that informs, critiques, and ultimately influences the course of American foreign policy.  The attacks of September 11, 2001, and recent U.S. actions in Afghanistan and Iraq have marked the emergence of a new international security environment and an evolving, often controversial role for the United States in meeting the challenges of the new international order.   As the United States today confronts critical decisions in preserving national security and defining America’s presence on the global stage, Nathan Hale provides a forum for members of our generation to become more deeply engaged in the analysis and debate of American foreign policy.  Through local chapters and a new research institute, we bring conscientious men and women together to discuss policy issues, research and present facts for a wider audience, and suggest prescriptive measures for policymakers.  Through constructive dialogue, we also seek to learn from one another and build a network of future foreign policy leaders in the United States and abroad.

The Nathan Hale Foreign Policy Society is a registered Section 501(c)(3) non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.  To read our organizational bylaws, click here.

Our Directors & Fellows

Our various activities – including our Nathan Hale Blog, our Department of Studies, and events at our Regional Chapters – are led by our President, our Director of Studies, our National Director, and the Directors of our various regional and thematic study programs.  Each of our research programs is also supported by a number of researchers.  Our staff draws from young scholars and professionals at top universities, think tanks, and government organizations.  Most of our fellows are affiliated with Oxford or Yale University.  We also have fellows and advisors from Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Cornell, and other leading universities; the Council on Foreign Relations; numerous U.S. government agencies including the Departments of State, Treasury and Homeland Security; and other leading centers for foreign policy research.   Please click on each fellow’s name to see a brief biography.
